Educating students in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico
Our team is collaborating with students in Xalapa, Veracruz Mexico! We have been teaching them about water and soil quality issues in our community (related to past mining and current human impact) as well as our dependence on the Great Lakes for clean water. We also shared our Lexus Eco Challenge project with them. Their school is bilingual, but we still translated our questionnaire to Spanish because it was more convenient for less fluent students.
We then received information back from the students in Xalapa. It turns out that there is a lot of similarities between our community and their community in terms of human impact on the land, what is being done about it, and what students are learning about regarding soil and water quality issues in our respective schools. We were interested to hear that their community has a problem with nitrate contamination too!
We are sharing our work with other educators via an article in the spring 2018 edition of the Michigan Science Teachers Association (MSTA) Journal.
